The inner-city outreach work strives to be our contribution – however small – to these challenges; sharing the blessings, we have received. “I was a stranger and you took me in.” “I was hungry and you fed me.” The inner-city outreach is made up of several projects and partnerships which aim to address different challenges:

  1. Student Outreach: We have set up Lutheran Students Organisations at UKZN – Howard Campus as well as DUT – Steve Biko campus. We have a partnership with a similar organisation at the MUT. In time organisations will be set at other tertiary learning institutions in Durban. More…

  2. Refugee Outreach: There is a large refugee population in Durban. During the widespread xenophobic attacs on refugees in 2009 we got involved in mediation work in the informal settlement of Cato Crest as well as – through coordination by Diakonia – in a feeding scheme in Berea. We have formed a partnership with the Children Care Centre – a creche run by women from the Union of Refugee Women (LUA click here). We also host a Congolese congregation in our St.Michael’s Church building, who hold services and prayer meetings there on an ongoing basis.

  3. HIV/AIDS Outreach work is done through our NPO, the PUSH Project (click here).

  4. Street Kid Outreach work is currently being done through partnering with other organisations. Members of our students organisations take part in street-kid-days and a volunteer from our German partner, the ELM works for iCare, a street kid organisation based in Durban and Amanzimtoti.
