Lutherans Uniting in Action (LUA)

In 2008 a “Healing of Memories” Workshop was attended by Lutheran pastors from the wider EThekwini Area coming from both churches (ELCSA and ELCSA-NT). The “Healing of Memories Institute” led the three day encounter which gave a platform for personal sharing of suffering and hurt – often linked to our countries Apartheid history. By sharing their stories, the first step towards better mutual understanding, support and cooperation was taken.

A need was seen to continue this engagement on a grass-root level. The Lutheran congregations of St.Michael’s (ELCSA) and Lutherkirche and St.Paul’s (both ELCSA-NT) in the Durban City Area agreed to hold joint services. Congregational Council members met and after one joint service, the idea of a joint committee to unite in social-outreach work was born.

The committee comes up with strategies of building awareness on social-justice issues in our city in our congregations and of being jointly involved in projects. Partnerships have been entered into with the Children Care Centre – a creche in the inner city, run by women from the Union of Refugee Women, catering for refugee and South African children in the “Point Rd Area”. Support is giving in form of used clothing, sending a volunteer to assist in the teaching. In future our Youth, Young Adults and Students (ELCSASO) are set to be involved in this remarkable creche, run by refugee women.

Other joint activities include Joint Lenten Midweek Devotions.
